Micromachining of Thin CFRP with UV-PS Laser Pulses

It is well known that Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) has attractive features like high-durability, high-strength and light-weight. These features have been stimulating the CFRP to be applied for a wide variety of applications. For example, by using the CFRP as a body material of aircrafts and automobiles, higher fuel efficiency and hence lower carbon emissions in transportations has been realized. Also, in sports and recreation, items such as fishing rods, golf club shafts and tennis rackets heavily incorporate CFRP.

There are two types of carbon fibers (CFs), PAN-type and Pitch-type (http://www.carbonfiber.gr.jp/english/ material/type.html). The PAN-type CF, which is almost amorphous carbon, has high tensile strength and high elastic modulus and is commonly applied for structural material composites. On the other hand, the Pitch-type CF, which is almost graphite, has ultra-high elastic modulus and is adopted in high stiffness components such as robot arms to handle large glass panels. Anisotropic Pitch-type CF has very high thermal conductivity (200-800W/mK), which is comparable to or higher than copper. Furthermore, the coefficient of thermal expansion of the Pitch-type CFRP is extremely low (-1.3×10-6℃), which is advantageous to dimensional stability in high temperature environments.

ICALEO 2014: The Premier Conference for World-Class Laser Research

For the first time, presentations at the Laser Institute of America’s 33rd International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO®) will undergo a peer-review process that will bring even more scholarly rigor to the cutting-edge research presented at the conference.

“It’s my second year as general chair, but there have been a few more years of my being a member of the conference chairs,” says returning Congress General Chair Stefan Kaierle of Laser Zentrum Hannover. “The lessons I have learned have grown during that period, and one of my main findings is that we need a good team, composed out of the conference chairs, the advisory committees and the staff from the LIA in order to set up a good conference. Only if we all work closely together with intense information exchange, are we able to find the best solutions for changes to incorporate or just to decide on how successful parts of the conference can be further improved or maintained.” Continue reading

ICALEO 2013: The Premier Conference for Industry-Leading Laser Research

With a new general chairman and the first female recipient of the Arthur L. Schawlow award, the 32nd International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO®) Oct. 6-10 in Miami, FL promises to yet again raise the bar on the laser industry’s premier research conference.

Stefan Kaierle, who for the past two years has served as chair of the Laser Materials Processing Conference, takes the helm of the Laser Institute of America’s signature event this year.

“My main concern was, as always, to put together a strong program of high interest for many participants,” said Kaierle, head of the materials and processes department for Laser Zentrum Hannover. “We needed to have presentations and papers on the latest results and emerging applications. A good mixture from macro via micro to nano is important for ICALEO as we want to cover the whole range of laser manufacturing applications.” Continue reading

A Novel Laser Trepanning System for Research and Production
