ICALEO 2014: The Premier Conference for World-Class Laser Research

For the first time, presentations at the Laser Institute of America’s 33rd International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO®) will undergo a peer-review process that will bring even more scholarly rigor to the cutting-edge research presented at the conference.

“It’s my second year as general chair, but there have been a few more years of my being a member of the conference chairs,” says returning Congress General Chair Stefan Kaierle of Laser Zentrum Hannover. “The lessons I have learned have grown during that period, and one of my main findings is that we need a good team, composed out of the conference chairs, the advisory committees and the staff from the LIA in order to set up a good conference. Only if we all work closely together with intense information exchange, are we able to find the best solutions for changes to incorporate or just to decide on how successful parts of the conference can be further improved or maintained.” Continue reading

ICALEO 2013 Offers Achievable New Horizons for Laser Industry

Much like the laser-assisted femto photography that has allowed MIT researchers to see around corners, the 32nd International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO®) illuminated photonic research in everything from routine processing to more arcane applications like laser-assisted generation of human cells.

And, as did plenary speaker Boris Chichkov with his estimation that you could “print” a man’s cells — bone, fat, cartilage and skin — in two hours and 47 minutes, ICALEO 2013 offered extraordinary visions of new horizons being made achievable by the laser industry’s latest studies.

The finely regimented parade of cutting-edge research that is ICALEO never fails to produce memorable moments for its hundreds of attendees. Those who experienced this year’s conference on Oct. 6-10 — including a significant number of first-time attendees and presenters — were treated to another incomparable array of vital knowledge. Origin and New Wave of Laser Welding

The author started laser materials processing in 1965 with developing the CO2 laser, and since then has been involved in a variety of materials processing using CW (continuous wave) to USLP (ultrashort laser pulse). Among them laser welding has attracted a lot of the author’s interest because of its profound and interesting physics from linear to nonlinear processes. The author’s work on laser welding is classified into two groups; depending on the laser absorption process. In the first group, CW laser welding process is studied based on linear absorption process, and the research efforts are directed to understanding keyhole welding process, and expanding the process limits. In the second group, USLP welding is analyzed where the laser energy is absorbed by nonlinear process, and is shown to provide excellent welding performances so that the most process limits found in the first group are in principle removed. In this paper, laser welding technology is presented starting from its origin using a CO2 laser to a new wave of laser welding brought by USLP. Continue reading

ICALEO 2013: The Premier Conference for Industry-Leading Laser Research

With a new general chairman and the first female recipient of the Arthur L. Schawlow award, the 32nd International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO®) Oct. 6-10 in Miami, FL promises to yet again raise the bar on the laser industry’s premier research conference.

Stefan Kaierle, who for the past two years has served as chair of the Laser Materials Processing Conference, takes the helm of the Laser Institute of America’s signature event this year.

“My main concern was, as always, to put together a strong program of high interest for many participants,” said Kaierle, head of the materials and processes department for Laser Zentrum Hannover. “We needed to have presentations and papers on the latest results and emerging applications. A good mixture from macro via micro to nano is important for ICALEO as we want to cover the whole range of laser manufacturing applications.” Continue reading

ICALEO 2009 – Accepting the Challenge

Held in the Hilton located in the Walt Disney World® Resort, the 28th International Congress on Applications of Lasers and Electro-Optics (ICALEO®) once again brought together many of the best and brightest of laser and optics professionals and scientists to network and review the state-of-the-art in laser materials processing and predict where the future will lead. For four full days, plus the pre-conference Welcome Celebration held poolside at the Hilton Hotel, ICALEO 2009 provided a platform for the current issues on the forefront of laser materials processing.
