ICALEO 2015 Speakers Shine

Expanding the Bounds of Laser Materials Processing Research

While the opening and closing plenary sessions of the International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO®) are always a major draw, the invited papers that will be presented throughout the five-day conference are a treasure trove of novel laser research and applications.

ICALEO will take place in Atlanta, GA this year on Oct. 18-22, where about two dozen invited papers — presentations given special attention by conference and session chairs — are scheduled. Chaired for the first time by Silke Pflueger of DirectPhotonics, Pflueger is also joined by three other conference chairs: Laser Materials Processing Conference Chair Christoph Leyens, Laser Microprocessing Conference Chair Michelle Stock, and returning Nanomanufacturing Conference Chair Yongfeng Lu. With last year’s implementation of a peer-review process, ICALEO 2015 is yet again slated to be the premier conference for the latest in laser materials processing research and technology. Advanced Laser Applications Presented at ICALEO 2014

ORLANDO, FL, Nov. 10, 2014 — A new peer-review process for select presentations and a host of novel laser research expanded on the tradition and impact of 33rd installment of the Laser Institute of America’s flagship conference in San Diego on Oct. 19-23.

The International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO®) featured 56 presentations given at least two reviews in a double-blind process, said returning General Chair Stefan Kaierle of Laser Zentrum Hanover. “We believe it was necessary… to change the way we present our work and especially to improve the quality.” About 35 to 40 papers will be published in a special edition of the Journal of Laser Applications, he said.

ICALEO featured another smorgasbord of laser research and experimentation spanning the traditional and the novel — from 3D printing of human cells and killing malaria-carrying mosquitoes to powering a small flying craft and improving the dyeing and patterning of textiles. Continue reading

ICALEO 2014: The Premier Conference for World-Class Laser Research

By Geoff Giordano

For the first time, presentations at the Laser Institute of America’s 33rd International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO®) will undergo a peer-review process that will bring even more scholarly rigor to the cutting-edge research presented at the conference.

“It’s my second year as general chair, but there have been a few more years of my being a member of the conference chairs,” says returning Congress General Chair Stefan Kaierle of Laser Zentrum Hannover. “The lessons I have learned have grown during that period, and one of my main findings is that we need a good team, composed out of the conference chairs, the advisory committees and the staff from the LIA in order to set up a good conference. Only if we all work closely together with intense information exchange, are we able to find the best solutions for changes to incorporate or just to decide on how successful parts of the conference can be further improved or maintained.” Continue reading
