Dr. Peter Leibinger Named LIA’s 2023 Schawlow Winner

Orlando, FL – October 31, 2023 – The Laser Institute (LIA) is thrilled to announce the recipient of the prestigious Arthur L. Schawlow Award for 2023. This year, the award goes to the esteemed Dr.-Ing. E. h. Peter Leibinger for his outstanding contributions in laser technology, his commercial success, and his accomplishments as an industry leader.

Started in 1982, the Arthur L. Schawlow Award is one of LIA’s highest honors, named after the esteemed physicist and laser pioneer, Dr. Arthur Schawlow. This award is presented annually to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, innovation, and impact within the realms of science and technology.

Dr.-Ing. E. h. Peter Leibinger is widely recognized as a trailblazer and has held several positions as managing director at various TRUMPF companies. He was Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of TRUMPF SE + Co. KG and has been the TRUMPF Supervisory Board Chairman since July. In 2020, Dr. Leibinger was also appointed as co-chair of an expert council to advise the German federal government on the development of quantum computers. These are just some of the remarkable achievements that show his commitment to innovation and how he has become a true leader of industry.

The award ceremony honoring Dr.-Ing. E. h. Peter Leibinger took place on Wednesday, October 18 at The Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, IL. During the ceremony, Dr. Leibinger delivered his address entitled “The Laser-TRUMPF Synergy”.

LIA Announces Conference Program Highlights for ICALEO 2017

Orlando, FL – September 28, 2017 – The Laser Institute of America (LIA) announces the technical program and conference highlights for the 36th annual International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO®). Industry visionaries, technical specialists, researchers, end users, and equipment manufacturers will convene at the Sheraton Atlanta Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia, to explore advances in laser applications happening today in a wide variety of industries October 22-26.

“I am honored to have worked with the most innovative minds in laser applications to bring ICALEO’s program to life,” said congress general chair, Christoph Leyens, of TU Dresden and the Fraunhofer IWS in Dresden, Germany.

The opening plenary session explores medical and climate applications while giving a glimpse at new laser tools. The session will surely push the limits regarding traditional views of laser applications:

  • Mark Schnitzer, an associate professor at Stanford University, and investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, works in neural circuit dynamics and optical imaging. His optical innovations are used to further neuroscience studies worldwide.
  • University of Colorado department of physics professor, Dr. Henry C. Kapteyn, builds new tabletop “x-ray laser” light sources and helps develop corresponding applications.
  • Jeff Deems is a researcher at CIRES, the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colorado where he also serves as the liaison for the NASA Airborne Snow Observatory. Deems specializes in laser mapping snow packs and developing lidar applications for avalanche forecasting and climate applications.

To close ICALEO, Dr. Leyens has invited plenary speakers from two groups that are spearheading adoption of additive manufacturing.

  • The accelerated certification of additively manufactured metals initiative director at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is Dr. Wayne King. He will discuss how his team is leading the transition from conventional manufacturing methods to metal additive manufacturing.
  • Florian Bechmann, head of Engineering & Technology (Concept Laser brand) at GE Aviation will explore technologies that advance manufacturing of jet engines and other airplane components using new tools such as additive manufacturing.

ICALEO has a strong emphasis on Laser Materials Processing and in recent years technical presentations have integrated additive manufacturing, often known as 3D Printing, with traditional subtractive technologies like cutting, drilling, and marking, as well as with welding, inspection and optical analysis. Sessions delving into the specifics of laser applications were organized by:

  • Laser Materials Processing Conference Co-Chairs: Klaus Kleine, Coherent Inc. and Friedhelm Dorsch, TRUMPF Laser- und Systemtechnik GmbH
  • Laser Microprocessing Conference Co-Chairs: Michelle Stock, mlstock consulting and Cather Simpson, University of Auckland
  • Nanomanufacturing Conference Chair: Yongfeng Lu, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Schawlow Award will be presented to Dr. Paul Seiler, former managing director of TRUMPF Laser GmbH. The recognition is in honor of his pioneering work utilizing lasers in machine tools for industrial applications. Dr. Seiler joins luminaries in the field of lasers including Milton Chang, Reinhart Poprawe, and Steven Chu, who were past recipients.

Unparalleled Laser Innovations Mark the 35th Edition of ICALEO

Laser Institute of America’s annual meeting of academia and industry highlighted new developments in laser technology and provided a platform for global networking

ORLANDO, FL, NOVEMBER 8, 2016 — Over 400 attendees from 20 countries gathered from October 16-20, 2016 at the Sheraton® San Diego in San Diego, CA, for the 2016 Laser Institute of America’s International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO®).

Gathering a highly engaged group of field veterans, new registrants and students, this year’s ICALEO featured more than 200 presentations, 59 peer-reviewed talks, comprehensive biophotonics coverage, and the introduction of the new ICALEO mobile app. Returning Congress General Chair Silke Pflueger was back at the helm helping compile the most highly-rated Opening Plenary presentations delivered at an ICALEO conference thus far.

“We worked so hard this year to ensure, ICALEO 2016 once again exceeded all expectations,” said Pflueger. “Our opening plenary session is a great example. From visiting Mars, to self-driving cars and a LIGO revisit, we inspired new outlooks and forged new relationships, which is what ICALEO is all about.”

Opening plenary speakers included Nina Lanza from Los Alamos National Laboratory, who linked humanity together in her discussion about the laser used aboard the Opportunity rover on Mars, and Jim McBride from Ford Motor Company, who talked about the challenges of sensing on fully autonomous vehicles. Albert Lazzarini, Deputy Director of LIGO Laboratory at California Institute of Technology, presented breaking results regarding black holes made from the first gravitational waves detected by LIGO.

This year’s ICALEO also featured a variety of laser research and experimentation revelations, from the use of lasers in emerging areas, like paint stripping and dairy, to microprocessing and several new opportunities in wearables and medicine.

Highlights of the roughly 200 presentations include:

  • The writing of skin by 3D printed cells with ultrafast lasers, and insight into how creating structures on the surface of a biomaterial with lasers may eventually be able to control cell spreading
  • How to improve processing speed and precision with new beam delivery and beam shaping techniques, and how to optimize later cutting processes through Time Resolved Analysis of Nanosecond Pulsed Laser Processing of CFRP
  • A laser technique to modify the surface of bulk glass, called Picosecond Laser Pulses for Spatially Resolved Gloss Reduction, which demonstrated glass with dramatic gloss reduction by direct laser structuring
  • A new laser-assisted doping process that allows high performance devices to be fabricated from ultra-thin films of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs).
  • The successful applications of laser ablation for next generation contactless payment cards and flexible wearable devices and the generation of flexible printed “batteries” for future bendable, wearable and portable devices

Other highlights include LIA Executive Director Peter Baker’s honor as the first recipient of the new LIA Leadership Award. Retiring next April, Baker commented on his meaningful career: “At LIA we’re saving eyesight, preventing skin damage, and helping create laser technologies, products, and services that make the world a better place.”

The 2016 Arthur L. Schawlow Award was awarded to Yongfeng Lu, the Lott Distinguished Professor of Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, LIA Board Member, Past President, Treasurer and Fellow. LIA also honored Silke Pflueger and Neil Ball by elevating them to the highest level of membership as LIA Fellows.

By unanimous decision, the first place ICALEO Poster Award went to Kohei Asano and his colleagues from Osaka University, the Industrial Research Institute of Ishikawa, and Yamazaki Mazak Corporation in Japan for their poster Copper Layer Formation Produced with 100W Blue Direct Diode Laser System, while the first place Student Paper Award winner was Christian Hagenlocher from IFSW in Stuttgart, Germany, for his paper Space and Time Resolved Determination of Thermomechanical Deformation Adjacent to the Solidification Zone during Hot Crack Formation in Laser Welding.

As the 35th ICALEO ended, Neil Ball, newly-honored LIA Fellow, called the breakthrough laser event, “bar none, the best networking opportunity and the best opportunity to look forward and see what applications are on the horizon.”

Ken Dzurko, General Manager of SPI Lasers said, “LIA does a great job creating a comfortable, relaxed mood right for exchanging ideas at this one-of-a-kind event that’s really the world’s premier gathering of scientists interested in laser applications.”

Yongfeng Lu Named LIA’s 2016 Schawlow Award Winner


Laser Institute of America (LIA) Fellow, 2014 LIA President and 2016 ICALEO® Nanomanufacturing Conference Chair Dr. Yongfeng Lu has been selected as the 2016 Arthur L. Schawlow Award recipient recognizing his longstanding record of laser industry innovation and his significant contributions to basic and applied research in the fields of laser science and electrical engineering.

With more than 20 years of experience in the processing and characterization of microstructured and nanostructured materials and over 300 journal papers and 350 conference papers published, the Lott Distinguished Professor of Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) will receive the honor at this year’s International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO), to be held from Oct. 16-20, 2016, at the Sheraton® San Diego in San Diego, CA.

Lu, whose nanoengineering research has led to a number of compelling commercialization and product developments, received his bachelor’s degree from Tsinghua University (China) in 1984 and M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Osaka University (Japan) in 1988 and 1991, all in electrical engineering. His numerous professional accolades include election as SPIE Fellow, OSA Fellow and serving as Chair and General Chair for major international conferences in the field, including the Congress General Chair for ICALEO in 2007 and 2008, and general co-chair for LASE at Photonics West 2014 and 2015.

“I’ve worked throughout my professional career to test the boundaries, and help other engineers test the boundaries, in future-forward areas like nanoelectronics and laser-assisted nanomanufacturing,” Lu said. “I could not be more proud of my work, and my research team’s work. I am also absolutely honored to be the recipient of the distinguished Schawlow award, which I hope will continue to help me initiate breakthroughs in areas such as nanophotonics, Nano-Raman spectroscopy and 3D nanomanufacturing.”

Professor Lu established the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Laser Assisted Nano Engineering group in 2002, and has led several research projects for the university, funded by NSF, AFOSR, ONR, DTRA, DOE, DOT, NCESR, NRI, private companies and other foundations in Japan.

“Another one of my constant missions is to contribute to the international collaborations between LIA and sister societies in other countries,” Lu added.

LIA presented the first award in 1982 to Arthur L. Schawlow, who won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1981. Schawlow was co-recipient of the 1960 patent for the maser with Charles Townes, inventor of the laser. Past recipients have included Keming Du (2015), founder of EdgeWave, Reinhart Poprawe (2014), managing director of Fraunhofer ILT and LIA president for 2012, and Ursula Keller (2013), inventor of the semiconductor saturable absorber mirror, or SESAM, and the first female Schawlow award winner.

World’s Laser Industry Meets for the Premier Conference in Atlanta

 

The 34th International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO®) took place Oct. 18–22 at the Sheraton Atlanta Hotel in Georgia. This year the conference had over 400 attendees from 22 different countries and 200 presentations and posters highlighting the latest breakthroughs in laser research and development. ICALEO provided those that attended the opportunity to learn about advances in laser material processes and networking opportunities with scientists, engineers and researchers from across the globe.
