General Electric’s Dr. Marshall Jones To Discuss Industrial Laser Processes at IMTS’ Industrial Laser Conference

GE Global Research Center’s Dr. Marshall Jones will be headlining this year’s Industrial Laser Conference 2018. Held on day three of the International Manufacturing Technology Show, the one-day industry conference is set to take place on the 12 September at McCormick Place, Chicago IL.

A thought-leader in the advancement of laser materials processing and laser device development, Dr. Jones will be at the Industrial Laser Conference to discuss laser applications in the manufacturing process.

“The adoption of laser technology in manufacturing has been steadily growing, evident by the continued annual growth of laser sales globally where Europe has led the way, especially in Germany. Laser technology will continue to displace more conventional manufacturing processes due to it being faster, automatable, and cost effective,” said Jones.

As the Chief Engineer, Dr. Jones joined the GE Global Research Center in 1974 as a mechanical engineer after receiving his M.S and Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts. His career at GE saw him advance laser materials processing, laser device development and fibre optics to afford him 55 U.S. patents, 57 foreign patents, and over 50 publications. Last year Dr. Jones was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for his accomplishments.

The Industrial Laser Conference is presented by the Laser Institute of America in partnership with IMTS. The Laser Institute of America will also be hosting the photonics academic and industry ICALEO conference next month.

Dr. Jones will keynote the session titled ‘Case Studies of Industrial Laser Processes Based on Savings and Other Benefits’ at the Industrial Laser Conference. The speaker line-up includes William Adler, Wayne Penn, Ron Schaeffer and more, covering laser applications and laser processing for service providers.

The one-of-a-kind industrial laser applications workshop will have presentations from thought leaders and provide focused industry insights from key companies including IPG Photonics, Alabama Lasers, Stripmatic, EWI, FANUC America and GE.

LIA Presents Professor Reinhart Poprawe with Peter M. Baker Leadership Award

Laser Institute of America presented Professor Reinhart Poprawe, managing director of Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology (ILT), the Peter M. Baker Leadership Award during this year’s International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO®) in Atlanta, Georgia, Oct. 22-26.

The award acknowledges individuals who demonstrate outstanding leadership in an organization while significantly benefiting the laser community.  It is named after former LIA executive director, Peter M. Baker, who led LIA for almost three decades.

“There is no question that Professor Poprawe richly deserves this award. In our world of lasers, he is a leader on the grand scale, technical, organizational, political and social,” Baker said. “He is a fine gentleman, courteous, thoughtful, generous and funny. I consider it an honor to be his friend.”

Poprawe’s professional expertise includes laser applications, laser additive manufacturing, and photonics in life science. Additionally, he has a great deal of experience in laser development and plasma technology in the realms of process analysis, sensors for laser processes, laser induced plasmas and more.

“The award is from one of the most important laser communities in the world,” Poprawe said. “It is a great honor to receive this award as the first recipient after the original, Mr. Peter Baker himself.”

According to several of his peers, Poprawe has been an important figure within the industry for decades.

“Professor Poprawe has been an important figure here at LIA for years,” said Nat Quick, LIA’s executive director. “He has been an LIA board member since 2001 and he always steps up when it counts most. He served as an LIA president in 2012 and has functioned as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Laser Applications® (JLA) since 2010. He is incredibly generous and exemplifies what it means to be a leader.”

After earning his Physics Ph.D. in Germany, Poprawe worked as the laser-oriented process development department head for Fraunhofer ILT before becoming their managing director. Additionally, he holds the university chair for Laser Technology at the RWTH Aachen University.

“There are so many ingredients for a successful organization,” Poprawe said. “Vision; mission; research and product portfolios; roadmaps; SWOT-analysis; and education of the employees. Industry or even better societal use and implementation of our research results is what we do everything for, especially the development of the demanding competencies in the very fundamentals of Laser Technology and application Physics.”

Medical indwelling catheters, implanted into the body for up to three months at a time, tend to be prone to infections. A multi-discipline study is aiming to develop an optic-fiber delivered UV and Violet light-based therapy, in an effort to reduce the chance of catheter-related infections. Trumpf and Siemens have partnered up to help industrialize laser metal fusion technology, in an effort to make additive manufacturing of metal parts an essential part of production processes. Researchers at the Chalmers University of Technology aim to be able to transfer 100gb of data per second in a single fiber, with one core. To do this, the team is focusing on making the laser faster “while consuming less and less energy.” Learn more about the team’s ambitious plans here.

Could a device designed to identify pathogens and toxins be on its way to Mars? A NASA technologist hopes so and is currently testing a prototype Bio-Indicator Lidar Instrument (BILI) for use on a future Mars rover. Using ultraviolet lasers, BILI would be used to scan for biomarker molecules, as a clue to past life on the red planet. Find out more about BILI and Mars rovers here .

Three Companies Illustrating the Importance of Electro-Optics and Photonics

IPG Photonics Fiber Laser Used in Projector Prototype

Earlier this year, a fiber light laser, developed by IPG Photonics, was used in a prototype 4K RGB laser projector. This projector, made by NEC Display Solutions of America, is designed for large theater screens. According to Businesswire, NC3540LS (the prototype) can be stacked into a two-projector setup, becoming one of the brightest projector options available, at 70,000 lumens. The projector was demonstrated at CinemaCon, this past April.

Spectra-Physics Debuts Three Photon Imaging Ultrafast Laser Source

This year, Spectra Physics debuted Spirit-NOPA-IR, a three-photon imaging ultrafast laser source. With a peak power of > 10 MW, imaging of live tissue “results in exceptional clarity,” according to the company. This new imaging source is intended for neuroscience and other bio-imaging and expands on the company’s previous developments in bioimaging.

Jenoptik Builds Theater Dome to Test Laser Projection Lenses

Photonics and electro-optics are becoming a focal point for cinemas and amusement parks, as they put a greater focus on projection technology. Jenoptik, anticipating future and current needs, recently completed a theater dome designed to test laser projection lenses. The theater hosts a screen 24 feet in diameter, elevated five feet in the air, as well as a 30 by 16 foot flat screen for digital cinema testing. Jenoptik has created a number of large-scale stage and movie projectors for 3D theaters, dark rides, and simulators. This development shows no sign of that trend coming to an end.


Electro-optics and photonics are creating a significant impact on a wide array of disciplines and industries.
