Livermore Scientist Wayne King to Deliver LAM 2017 Keynote

In preparation for LAM® 2017, Lasers Today takes a closer look at the presenters and industry leaders at this year’s workshop.


The Laser Additive Manufacturing Workshop (LAM) is just around the corner, kicking off the next round of conferences and seminars designed for laser professionals. The Workshop is of importance in the ever-growing world of additive manufacturing; 3D printing and other additive manufacturing processes continue to reshape manufacturing as we know it, often creating revolutionary solutions to numerous challenges in a wide array of industries. Additive manufacturing is also creating jobs, and in some cases, reducing the environmental footprint of parts manufacturing.

At LAM, researchers and industry leaders come together to showcase research and developments in additive manufacturing. Sharing emerging technologies and concepts is how these experts aim to project the future of where additive manufacturing is headed to next. One of these presenters is Dr. Wayne King of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). King will deliver the Day Two keynote, “Modeling of Selective Laser Melting Process.”

About Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

For the most part, LLNL is closed to the public. However earlier this year, a few publications were welcomed into the facility for a small glimpse of the work being performed at the facility.

They are not just known for their 3D printing capabilities. The laboratory and its scientists, in association with University of California, have made more than a few key scientific discoveries and developments. To them, adding new elements to the periodic table and developing supercomputers are everyday tasks that are integral parts of their scholastic organizational culture.

Their 3D Printing Labs

LLNL is one of the largest additive manufacturing developers in the world. It is also home to the National Ignition Facility, which features the world’s largest laser. The facility’s primary focus is on metal parts, with two of the three 3D printing labs focusing on metal-based processes. In these labs, a jet engine was built in just eight days for approximately $10,000 dollars.

The laboratory is not just dedicated to its personal development of additive manufacturing. LLNL also launched the Accelerated Certification of Additively Manufactured Metals Initiative; a program which aims to improve metal 3D printing processes, while simultaneously increasing its adoption across industries. This initiative is directed by King.

Researchers at LLNL were the ones to discover what caused tiny, porous surfaces in 3D printed metal structures. They were also responsible for a breakthrough laser design using a powder bed select laser melting (SLM) 3D printer. That only scratches the surface of the progress underway at the laboratory, as LLNL also delves into 3D bioprinting, 3D printed foam and new state of the art 3D printing techniques.

Researchers at the Chalmers University of Technology aim to be able to transfer 100gb of data per second in a single fiber, with one core. To do this, the team is focusing on making the laser faster “while consuming less and less energy.” Learn more about the team’s ambitious plans here.

Could a device designed to identify pathogens and toxins be on its way to Mars? A NASA technologist hopes so and is currently testing a prototype Bio-Indicator Lidar Instrument (BILI) for use on a future Mars rover. Using ultraviolet lasers, BILI would be used to scan for biomarker molecules, as a clue to past life on the red planet. Find out more about BILI and Mars rovers here .

Trade Advisory: OSHA Now Providing Safety and Health Updates on Twitter

According to a recent trade advisory, the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will now post the latest safety and health updates on its new Twitter account @OSHA_DOL.

OSHA’s new Twitter account will provide critical information for employers, workers, and safety professionals about OSHA initiatives, activities, and publications. OSHA encourages safety and health professionals and companies to follow and retweet information relevant to members and stakeholders, as well as seek internal guidance from OSHA via the Twitter account.

Three Companies Illustrating the Importance of Electro-Optics and Photonics

IPG Photonics Fiber Laser Used in Projector Prototype

Earlier this year, a fiber light laser, developed by IPG Photonics, was used in a prototype 4K RGB laser projector. This projector, made by NEC Display Solutions of America, is designed for large theater screens. According to Businesswire, NC3540LS (the prototype) can be stacked into a two-projector setup, becoming one of the brightest projector options available, at 70,000 lumens. The projector was demonstrated at CinemaCon, this past April.

Spectra-Physics Debuts Three Photon Imaging Ultrafast Laser Source

This year, Spectra Physics debuted Spirit-NOPA-IR, a three-photon imaging ultrafast laser source. With a peak power of > 10 MW, imaging of live tissue “results in exceptional clarity,” according to the company. This new imaging source is intended for neuroscience and other bio-imaging and expands on the company’s previous developments in bioimaging.

Jenoptik Builds Theater Dome to Test Laser Projection Lenses

Photonics and electro-optics are becoming a focal point for cinemas and amusement parks, as they put a greater focus on projection technology. Jenoptik, anticipating future and current needs, recently completed a theater dome designed to test laser projection lenses. The theater hosts a screen 24 feet in diameter, elevated five feet in the air, as well as a 30 by 16 foot flat screen for digital cinema testing. Jenoptik has created a number of large-scale stage and movie projectors for 3D theaters, dark rides, and simulators. This development shows no sign of that trend coming to an end.


Electro-optics and photonics are creating a significant impact on a wide array of disciplines and industries. Outside of manufacturing and research applications, these companies are not only participating in innovative development, they are consistently changing the way laser and photonic applications are viewed in the world.
