Orlando, FL – October 31, 2023 – The Laser Institute (LIA) is thrilled to announce the recipient of the prestigious Arthur L. Schawlow Award for 2023. This year, the award goes to the esteemed Dr.-Ing. E. h. Peter Leibinger for his outstanding contributions in laser technology, his commercial success, and his accomplishments as an industry leader.

Started in 1982, the Arthur L. Schawlow Award is one of LIA’s highest honors, named after the esteemed physicist and laser pioneer, Dr. Arthur Schawlow. This award is presented annually to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, innovation, and impact within the realms of science and technology.

Dr.-Ing. E. h. Peter Leibinger is widely recognized as a trailblazer and has held several positions as managing director at various TRUMPF companies. He was Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of TRUMPF SE + Co. KG and has been the TRUMPF Supervisory Board Chairman since July. In 2020, Dr. Leibinger was also appointed as co-chair of an expert council to advise the German federal government on the development of quantum computers. These are just some of the remarkable achievements that show his commitment to innovation and how he has become a true leader of industry.

LIA’s Executive Director, Gilbert Haas said, “Peter Leibinger has advanced laser technology for decades. His innovative leadership, ardent support, and advocacy of lasers in science, politics and society contribute to the advancement of laser technology and applications worldwide.”

The award ceremony honoring Dr.-Ing. E. h. Peter Leibinger took place on Wednesday, October 18 at The Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, IL. During the ceremony, Dr. Leibinger delivered his address entitled “The Laser-TRUMPF Synergy”.

Dr. Bo Gu – 2022 Schawlow Award Recipient

ORLANDO, FL – September 22, 2022 — Laser Institute of America (LIA) Fellow, LIA Board officer Dr. Bo Gu has been selected as the 2022 Arthur L. Schawlow Award recipient in recognition to his career long contributions throughout the laser industry in the fields of micro- and nano engineering and laser applications in industrial metal processing.

With over 35 years in the laser material processing field, Dr. Bo Gu has built a reputable career which includes developing Asian and Chinese markets during his time as the Director of Asia operations and GM of IPG China. He has not only worked with IPG but for GSI group but has helped advance the laser industry with his collaborative spirit and willingness to mentor young professionals. Dr. Bo Gu continues to help professionals further their careers through his teachings including several educational courses on laser applications.

Dr. Bo Gu has had a successful research and development career and continues his contributions to the industry with the founding of BOS Photonics which specializes in photonic technologies and consulting photonic companies. He holds 75 patents on lasers and their applications and holds positions such as committee member of LIA and international advisor. One of Dr. Gu’s latest achievements is contributing to the published Handbook of Laser Micro- and Nano-Engineering as a co-author in December 2021.

When notified of his receiving this award, Dr. Bo Gu stated, “I would like to thank LIA for this prestigious award. It is a lofty honor for me. It is not only an affirmation of my 40 year long professional career in lasers, but also represents and witnesses the development of laser technology and its applications. Through my winning of this renowned award that bears the name of a great laser physicist, I hope the laser technology can be promoted to a higher level by combining it with some of the emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data, and to be applied to a wider range of fields for the benefit of mankind.”

The purpose of the Schawlow award is recognize outstanding, career-long contributions to basic and applied research in laser science and engineering leading to fundamental understanding of laser materials interaction and/or transfer of laser technology for increased application in industry, medicine and daily life. Originally named after it’s first recipient Dr. Arthur Schawlow in 1982 and throughout the years many more distinguished individuals have received this honor.

Executive Director of LIA, Dr. Nathaniel Quick stated, “The selection of Dr. Bo Gu as the 2022 Schawlow award is an excellent choice. Dr. Gu’s name certainly belongs alongside the names of previous recipients.”

The Schawlow award will be presented to Dr. Bo Gu at this year’s International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO) conference which takes place in Orlando, Florida this October 17th – 20, 2022.

LIA Names Laser Era Revolutionary Paul Seiler Recipient of 2017 Schawlow Award

ORLANDO, FL – September 20, 2017 – The Laser Institute of America (LIA) proudly announces Dr. Paul Seiler winner of the 2017 Arthur L. Schawlow Award. The LIA selected Seiler for pioneering laser use, expanding the field of industrial laser use, and creating innovative tools. He has shown a fundamental understanding of laser materials interactions and how laser capabilities can be applied to daily life.

Seiler will address the laser community during the LIA Awards Luncheon, which is part of the 2017 International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO®). ICALEO conference attendees are invited to attend this momentous awards ceremony, a long-standing LIA tradition, in an awards luncheon sponsored by EdgeWave GmbH Innovative Laser Solutions. The ceremony takes place at 12:30 p.m. on October 25^th, 2017, in Atlanta, GA.

The LIA created the Schawlow Award, given annually, for those who distinguish themselves through excellence in work related to basic and applied laser research. It is named after its initial recipient and 1981 Physics Nobel Prize Winner, Arthur L. Schawlow, whose work was instrumental to the invention of the laser. He was renowned for leveraging optical properties and co-obtaining the maser patent with Charles Townes.

Seiler will be recognized for his lifelong achievements in laser science and engineering. This year’s award recipient was a revolutionary – unhindered by the disbelief he encountered, and a dreamer from the beginning of his career.

“I started in 1963 inside a larger company and they lost the belief in lasers, that turned out to be a big misjudgment,” Seiler told LIA in a recent interview. “I wanted to follow my dream and was able to convince an owner of a small company that manufactured springs for watches, that he needs a laser.”

By sharing his knowledge about the uses and applications of lasers for manufacturing, Seiler gave the manufacturer an invaluable tool, which helped the company become Haas Laser, and eventually TRUMPF Laser, a world leader of solid state laser companies.

Seiler stands as a visionary and an influencer.

“In 1963 I encountered the laser for the first time,” he said. “At this time only a few people in the world had the vision that the laser would become such an important tool in the future.”

He went on to study precision mechanics at the University of Applied Sciences in Karlsruhe, Germany. The University of Stuttgart presented Seiler with an honorary doctorate in 2008, and he worked for 11 years as the managing director of TRUMPF Laser GmbH & Co. KG in Schramberg.

Seiler applied a fiber optic cable, known as the Laser Light Cable, to the laser. This innovation proved his continuous drive towards a robust laser. According to Seiler, the development was crucial for the success of solid-state lasers and, today, remains one of the keys for “easy to use” lasers. He believes the availability of the Laser Light Cable will increase the use of Ultra-Short-Pulse-Lasers in the next few years.

Seiler’s achievements include:

Only 11 years after the laser was invented, his first laser was applied in the 24/7 industrial application of lasers, paving the way for further innovation in 1971.
He engineered systems of lasers and components, setting a precedent for using lasers in conjunction with machines.
He developed high-power CW Lasers and was responsible for the “Mega-Installation” of more than 400 lasers for Volkswagen, fueling the widespread use of lasers in the automotive industry.
The TRUMPF laser group grew to be one of the largest solid-state laser companies in the world with production sides in the United States, Japan and Europe.

“Today I’m happy to share my fascination with all of the LIA laser-fascinated people,” Seiler told the LIA. “When I see how far the laser has come, I’m proud that I always believed in its success. I would like to be an example for the younger generation, motivating them to follow their passion. I thank LIA for supporting the laser society.”

Driven by limitless curiosity, Seiler’s inquisitive mind continues to thrive on the study and application of lasers.

“Even 14 years after retirement, I’m still just as fascinated by lasers as in 1963.” Seiler said.

ICALEO 2016 continues its 34-year tradition of connecting the laser industry and showcasing speakers

ORLANDO, FL – SEPTEMBER 8, 2016 – The world’s premier platform for breakthrough laser solutions is right around the corner: Laser Institute of America’s 2016 International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO^®), will be held this year from Oct. 16-20 at the Sheraton^® San Diego in San Diego, CA.

ICALEO, which bears a 34-year history as the most comprehensive spotlight on laser research and state-of-the-art laser materials processing, will provide both veteran and newcomer industry attendees with unbeaten opportunities to explore and connect at several networking events.
